The mass air flow sensor convert the amount of air drawn into the engine into a voltage signal.  The EEC needs to know intake air volume to calculate engine load.  This is necessary to determine how much fuel to inject, when to ignite the cylinder, and when to shift the trans.  The airflow sensor is located directly in the intake air system, between the air cleaner and the throttle body where it can measure the amount of air incoming.

Code’s Info

Airflow must be in a straight line before the MAF.  Creating bends before the MAF like Cold Air Intake kits can cause airflow sensor problems.  Also, a MAF runs off of voltage (as said above).  When the voltage is exceeded, this is called pegging.  The MAF can no longer create a proper air reading on what is coming into the engine.  This, in turn, may cause an extremely lean condition and blow the motor; however, this is usually only a problem with higher HP engines.  I recommend keeping the stock MAF if you’re N/A as it’s just as good as any after market MAF out there.  If you have a power-adder, SCT makes some nice MAFs.  Stay away from Pro-M, Granatelli, and C&L.
